Business Challenges
The firm’s inbox had become an operational system of its own, and it ran entirely on manual effort.
Each of the roughly 200 daily emails had to be opened, read, and understood before anything could happen. Skilled staff spent a lot of their day sorting correspondence instead of doing actual legal work. As caseloads grew, the only way to keep up was to add more hours.
Impact: processing capacity was tied directly to headcount.
The information the firm needed rarely sat in one place. A single email might mention a case in the message body, attach a scanned court order as a PDF, and link to another document hosted elsewhere. Staff had to piece these fragments together by hand, and every source required a different approach.
Impact: no simple rule or template could capture the data reliably.
Once an email was understood, someone still had to create the right task, draft the right document, book the meeting, and notify the right people. Each step was done manually, so the outcome depended on who handled the email and how busy they were that day.
Impact: inconsistent handling and a constant risk of missed details or deadlines.
Different types of correspondence follow different business flows, and each flow has its own rules. Generic automation tools could move emails between folders, but they couldn’t interpret legal content or decide what should happen next.
Impact: the firm needed a platform built for reasoning, not just routing.
Solution
DevCom built the solution on DAP, the DevCom Agentic Platform. Instead of a one-off application, the firm connects into DAP and receives custom AI agents, each designed for a specific legal workflow and able to work alongside the others.
Agents read every inbound email the way an experienced paralegal would.
- Process correspondence from courts, enforcement services and other sources
- Extract data from message bodies, attachments and linked documents
- Use LLM-powered entity extraction to identify case-relevant details
Extracted data doesn’t stop at the inbox. It moves the work forward.
- Creates tasks, documents, meetings and notifications automatically
- Triggers the correct business process for each email type
- Removes manual re-entry between email and internal systems
Each business flow gets its own agent, so the platform grows one process at a time.
- Cort (Court Imaging Agent) is live in production and tested on real emails
- RTP2 Default and ACR agents are in development
- ACR Suit Approval Agent (Attorney Comprehensive Review) is on PROD now.
- Around 15 agents planned across the firm’s operations
Agents work as a coordinated team, with people still in charge of what matters.
- Agents delegate tasks to each other inside multi-step flows
- Exceptions are handed off to a person for review
- Permission-based controls define who can access and change what
- Built-in agent builder for custom prompts and behavior
Value Delivered
The platform turns email handling from manual reading into automated execution. Agents extract the data, trigger the next steps, and route only true exceptions to people. With the first agent in production, the firm now has a foundation that expands workflow by workflow.
The team now spends its time where legal expertise is actually needed.
Every email of the same type is handled the same way every time.
The platform is designed to use AI where it adds the most value.
Growth in volume no longer means growth in headcount.
